Film making requires endurance says Gargi Sen

A talk on “scriptwriting for documentaries” was delivered by Gargi Sen, the renowned documentary filmmaker at Nila Theatre yesterday. Gargi opined that Script writing in documentary is a different category of writing and it is purely an art practice. A thorough research is to be done so as to bring forth the documentary at its best. She stressed that documentary is basically content based and there are layers of complexities underlying in it. The arena of film is not at all lucrative and we have to take pains to survive in this problematic field. She said that the message of film is disseminated in it. She pointed out the fact that film making requires endurance and the film makers must have a query in mind why they are making the film. Along with isolation and alienation problem, Doppler effect is also seen in the making of film.A short clipping from the documentary named “Narayan Gangaram Surve” directed by Arun Khopkar was screened to illustrate the way in which it is created. The story revolves around the poet Narayan Surve and his life in the immortal world where he is addressed with a name by others. His friend who plans to picture a film on him tries to be his replica in appearance and behavior. In this short talk, Gargi Sen interacted and clarified the doubts raised by the audience. Gargi Sen ,who has been involved with filmmaking since 1987 and one of the founders of the Magic Lantern Foundation.
